Description David Williams CLA 2013-02-23 13:33:52 EST
For Eclipse proper, as we near release, we have ability to "hide" a build, by presence of a file ... named, obvious, buildHidden, in the root of the specific download directory, for that specific build. This allows us to do the renaming, etc., and allow it to be mirroring until the official release.

Equinox does not have this, and was never deemed too important since its smaller and in less demand. We did the renaming, etc., but just left on build machine until the release, and then promoted it.

But, recent events have highlighted another reason to implement this functionality some day ... nothing urgent, just opening this to track.

The build machine hard drives "crashed". They (webmasters) do take occasional "snapshot" backups, so they can always restore to that, but ... that means a day or threes worth of work might be lost. (they used to say they did the snapshots nightly, but ... the recent crash implied the snapshot was several days old ... might not be able to finish a snapshot backup in 24 hours?

At any rate, we "lost" our renamed version of the release, and had to re-created. It was not that hard to do (luckily, I noticed!) but, highlights the importance of having important things on "downloads" itself ... which is more frequently backed up (incremental backups) and uses some RAID technology (I think) to provide redundancy. In theory, leaving important things on "build server" carries more risk of losing it.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got
resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some
reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it.
The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you
still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is
(for whatever reason) no longer relevant.

If the bug is still relevant, please remove the stalebug whiteboard tag.
