Be able to select arbitrary columns in text editors.

Example:
I was converting an Ant build file to use an includesfile and I wanted to be 
able to select and remove all the leading and trailing XML noise and keep the 
required text in between.

I guess you then want to work with those columns. Marking as duplicate.
