Screenshot of the error

I change the colors in the Window -> Preferences -> General -> Appearance -> Colors and Fonts ->
under View and Editor Folders:
* Active Part Foreground
* Active Part Background Begin
* Active Part Background End

The preview shows what I want it to be but after applying the changes they don't... apply.

I'm using GTK 2.24.13

The colour of the tabs is now controlled from CSS. See http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse4/CSS

Workaround:

remove those CSS files, for my system (Archlinux):

rm /usr/share/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.platform_4.2.1.v201209141800/css/*.css

Now even the rounded borders went away and I have more space to work :)

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
