4.2.

'Toggle Editor Area Visibility' needs to be renamed to 'Toggle Shared Area Visibility'
Comment 1 John Arthorne CLA 2013-06-04 09:09:20 EDT
Really? I know "Shared Area" is an underlying technology term that we use, but I don't think that will make much sense for end users. I think "Shared Area" could easily imply it is shared with other users. Do we expose the Shared Area term to end users elsewhere?

When you minimized the shared area, its tooltip is "Shared Area".

Really. Unless you have a better name for that area. Having "editor" in the name is no longer OK, because that area can also host views in 4.x. Plus, see comment 2.

Main Area, perhaps? Or better, Main View*. CSS calls it the Primary Data Stack**.

*) I'm not a fan of naming any one UI widget an "Area", because to me "Area" in UI context means a space that by itself doesn't have any UI widgets or controls.
**) The full CSS id is org.eclipse.e4.primaryDataStack.

Primary Data Stack would be too long imho, and as it doesn't really look like a stack, I think Main Area would be ok. I don't agree with Main View as we're renaming it as it's not "Editor" -only, and we should not rename to anything with "View" in it, as it can also contain Editors.

Can we agree on 'Toggle Main Area Visibility' for the text?

No. "main" has even less meaning for the user. "shared" makes more sense because that area is shared between all perspectives in the same window, and as mentioned before, the term "Shared Area" is already used for it (see comment 2).
