Many of the newer desktop user interfaces display icons at sizes larger than 48px. GNOME 3 will do this by default. It would be great forEclipse to look pretty in these environments. A 256px icon would do the trick as the 48x48 ones from org.eclipse.platform look pixellated. Can we get larger ones? This would be great to have for Indigo and the Linux distributions can carry them in their Helios packages in the meantime. Thanks!
Is it the branding icons? Or do you mean general toolbar icons? PW
Branding (window, for use in .desktop, etc.). Sorry, should have been more clear.
Susan, did we generate the branding icons in org.eclipse.platform, or do we get the from the Foundation? PW
(In reply to comment #3) > Susan, did we generate the branding icons in org.eclipse.platform, or do we get > the from the Foundation? > > PW (In reply to comment #3) > Susan, did we generate the branding icons in org.eclipse.platform, or do we get > the from the Foundation? > > PW Long ago, these were done by IBM but they are owned/managed by the foundation. It would be best if we could construct something out of something that already exists. See bug 340599.
Created attachment 192479 [details] screenshot of GNOME 3 Alt-Tab with Eclipse open Thanks for the pointer to that bug, Susan. The window icon on Linux is different than what you have attached to bug #340599. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like on GNOME 3. Note the pixellation of the Eclipse icon vs. the Firefox icon.
Any progress on this? I can ping some graphic artists at Red Hat if we need a hand.
(In reply to comment #6) > Any progress on this? I can ping some graphic artists at Red Hat if we need a > hand. yes, please do. It sounds like you know what you need. It's not so much that we don't have the graphics resource available to us, but I don't have cycles to figure out what is needed/write a request.
(In reply to comment #7) > (In reply to comment #6) > > Any progress on this? I can ping some graphic artists at Red Hat if we need a > > hand. > > yes, please do. It sounds like you know what you need. Okay, I've enquired internally and will figure something out. I'll let you know what happens.
Jakub Steiner produced this icon (he gave me the source SVG and previews of other sizes if anyone wants to see them, too): http://people.redhat.com/~overholt/eclipse.png Thanks to him for going to the trouble. He is fine with whatever license it needs to be (it's currently Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0 but I assume it'll have to be EPL). I realize this is probably considered a different branding. In fact, Jakub said in an email to me that he "took the liberty to do something that's not simply the Eclipse logo, but only a derivative thereof, giving it a bit of a visual punch. I think the key elements that make it recognisable are still included." I'm not sure what is the best way to proceed. I'd like to see good-looking icons for Fedora 15 and other distributions using 256x256 icons by default (the latest Ubuntu comes to mind) but don't want to deviate from upstream (eclipse.org) too much. We *could* carry this in eclipse-build (the Linux Tools effort from which most Linux distribution packages of Eclipse originate). I'd appreciate the thoughts of others on this. Thanks.
Definitely need Ian to chime in on this one.
(In reply to comment #10) > Definitely need Ian to chime in on this one. I like it! I say for forward and use it. The graphic would need to be officially attached to this bug, so it is contribute under our terms of use.
Created attachment 194849 [details] zip of Jakub Steiner's icon in all sizes and the source SVG file Thanks, Ian. Jakub Steiner of Red Hat created the attached zip file. He said the following in two emails to me: "Attached is a preview of the icon in all sizes and a tarball of the individual sizes, plus the source SVG file. The SVG is not meant to be installed. I've included it to allow you to re-render it at any resolution for use on the website or create derivative works." and "I am ok with whatever the upstream license is."

I really think Jakub needs to submit this using his own bugzilla account. Sorry but we need to make sure this is clean.
Created attachment 194882 [details] eclipse icon in all required sizes Attached is the icon in all required sizes, including the source SVG. Only the bitmaps are intended to be installed to $prefix/icons/hicolor. I am the sole author of the icon and am contributing the artwork on behalf of Red Hat to be distributed under the EPL.
It would be nice to get this in 3.7 as Eclipse doesn't look pretty on Linux.
Somehow this bug has evolved from "larger icons" to "new Eclipse logo"... Personally I think the new icon looks great. This kind of branding change isn't something we'd typically add during our release candidate phase though. For example there is a large amount of graphics used within Eclipse community that is derived from this logo. See for example: http://www.eclipse.org/artwork/ Most of the feature branding icons and images are also based on the logo, lots of graphics on eclipse.org, etc. A new logo in the launcher that doesn't match the logo anywhere else doesn't seem optimal. I'll bring the topic up at the Eclipse PMC call this week, but my gut reaction is that this is better as a Juno release thing. On the other hand, if there was a larger copy of the *current* icon we could probably get that in place for indigo. I can confirm on my Win7 box, the 48 pixel icon looks pixelated next to other applications so I definitely agree with the need for a bigger icon. Out of curiosity, does GNOME really display 256x256 icons?? The largest I've seen elsewhere is 128x128. We'll need to at least check how this looks on Windows and Mac.

Do we want to create another bug for this specifically? I don't think we should ship 3.7 with the current pixelated look.
Is it not possible to reuse the image from Mac icon?
(For the Mac, we have icons up to 128x128px.)
Andrew, do you know where the icons for the Mac are coming from? The file is called Eclipse.icns. Are they part of the launcher?
Icons are in the org.eclipse.equinox.executable project, (dev.eclipse.org:/cvsroot/rt, org.eclipse.equinox/framework/bundles/org.eclipse.equinox.executable) Icons for mac (Eclipse.icns), linux (icon.xpm), and solaris (Eclipse.*.pm) are found relative to the binary under the appropriate bin/[ws]/[os]/[arch] folder. Specifically for mac: bin/carbon/macosx/ppc/Eclipse.app/Contents/Resources/Eclipse.icns bin/carbon/macosx/x86/Eclipse.app/Contents/Resources/Eclipse.icns bin/cocoa/macosx/ppc/Eclipse.app/Contents/Resources/Eclipse.icns bin/cocoa/macosx/x86/Eclipse.app/Contents/Resources/Eclipse.icns bin/cocoa/macosx/x86_64/Eclipse.app/Contents/Resources/Eclipse.icns For windows, the icon is under org.eclipse.equinox.executable/library/win32/eclipse.ico org.eclipse.equinox.executable/library/wpf/eclipse.ico On windows the executables must be recompiled with the new icons.
see also bug 340599, which is for larger icons on win. I showed the icon from Jakub Steiner to our designer, she loved it and would like to go back and ensure the app icons for all platforms/sizes incorporate this look. Marking this bug for 3.8 to go back and check all platforms. (Did anything happen for 3.7?)
Nothing happened for 3.7 AFAIK and we didn't want to diverge from the eclipse.org downloads so we haven't touched our Fedora builds or the upstream for them, eclipse-build (part of Linux Tools (Technology)).

Since the Juno release train will contain 4.2, I think we should target a redesigned icon for 4.2 only. That might also help people distinguish "old" vs "new" eclipse platform going forward.
(In reply to comment #26) > Since the Juno release train will contain 4.2, I think we should target a > redesigned icon for 4.2 only. That might also help people distinguish "old" vs > "new" eclipse platform going forward. Agree. The new icon work will be on the 4.2 stream, and there will likely be some "freshening up" of the icons to go along with a new splash screen. We are targeting end of year for this work or early 2012, so marking 4.2M5
I have submitted a request for a newer, fresher, splash screen and corresponding icons in these sizes: 16x16 24x24 32x32 48x48 128x128 256x256 (is there a 64x64 on any platform?) I don't know anything about how the various platform icon files are built. I requested .png files at a minimum and once we have the new artwork I can ask for different formats if needed. Am i missing any sizes?
Generalizing title because this is about both new icons and splash screen.
Created attachment 210516 [details] the splash!!! Here is the new splash!
Created attachment 210517 [details] splash with designer guidelines for programmatic elements Here is the designer's mockup that includes the programmatic elements. For the most part, progress bar and progress message are in the same position. Note that the build id is shown right justified with Juno. I realize we can't "nail" this but the idea is we position the build id so that most fonts/build ids we get pretty close.
I'm wondering if we have another image for the about dialog or no?
(In reply to comment #30) > Created attachment 210516 [details] > the splash!!! Released for the next 4.2 I build. PW
(In reply to comment #32) > I'm wondering if we have another image for the about dialog or no? yes, I totally spaced it. I'll open a graphics request for this. Can someone point me to the image in the git repo so I can give the exact size specs to the designer? Seems safest to me to work within the same size, as I know we've had all kinds of wrapping/default size issues on various languages/fonts/platforms

I suspect it could be PNG now.

Submitted a request. I expect we'll get the icons first (since there is additional work that has to be done per platform) and the about graphic will follow later.
The new Splash screen looks great!
Sorry, does this only look like that on Chrome, or does Git here show only a Hex diff for links like the .gif files?;-/ I saw a link to a working icon in Lars' tweet, looks cool, bit like a perl. @Werner: Attachment section in bugzilla is your friend :-)
Wow... Both the splash screen and icon looks great! One thing I've always wondered about though. Why is the copyright text not antialiased? OS X icons should be up to 1024x1024 pixels in size though. See https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/IconsImages/IconsImages.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20000967-TP6
In reply to comment #40: Very observant comment, thanks :) When the first Eclipse splash screen was created, we found that adding anti-aliasing to the copyright text made it more difficult to read, due to the small font size. Regards, Linda
@Linda it looks like the Eclipse ball and Logo is a bit too much on the top (see for a screenshot on Linux) here: http://www.vogella.de/blog/2012/02/08/eclipse-gets-sexy-again-new-splashscreen/ Looks to me that it could be a bit more centered.
Dear Friends Both the splash screen and icon looks great!
In reply to comment #42: Thanks for the feedback and post Lars :) The base splash does look unbalanced, so we'd appreciate knowing what you think about the splash as seen in context with all elements. Could you look at the attachment "splash with designer guidelines for programmatic elements", and also a live splash in build, and let us know if you still have the same concerns? We took into account the programmatic addition of build id text, progress message and progress indicator when assessing the overall balance of the design, but it would be good to get more feedback. Thanks. Btw, credit for the new splash design goes to designer Jinsil Boo who worked with Susan and myself. We were wowed by her fresh interpretation of the eclipse imagery.
@Linda: The screenshot in my blog was actually taken from a starting Eclipse under Ubuntu so I believe I have seen it in the context. Or is the current I-Build not including all elements in the Splash?
(In reply to comment #45) > @Linda: The screenshot in my blog was actually taken from a starting Eclipse > under Ubuntu so I believe I have seen it in the context. > > Or is the current I-Build not including all elements in the Splash? @Lars: - okay then, we will revisit to see if layout can be improved, thanks.
(In reply to comment #45) > Or is the current I-Build not including all elements in the Splash? I think the progress message isn't currently appearing according to the designers' intentions. I have entered bug 371139 for that. As far as balance, it does feel now that I'm seeing it every day that the ball is too close to the top edge. It looks like there is room to move it down a bit and still leave plenty of space for the messages.
+1 for moving it down a bit.
Now that's what I call a splash screen! I'd also prefer the Eclipse logo to be centered vertically.
Created attachment 212315 [details] splash with improved vertical placement

the icons are going to have to wait for M7...
Looks much better IMHO +1
I've released the splash and icon into R4_HEAD PW
Just tested. During startup the "Juno" String is overridden by the version number. Looks not good. Let me know if you want a Screenshot.
Just downloaded the latest integration build, and now the splash screen looks fine.
The icons are nearly done, I'm trying to make an up to date list of formats/sizes needed for various platforms. Here's my take, can those of you who track particular platforms please review and add/correct? As a base we should have PNG format in 16x16, 22x22 (for linux platforms that use a border), 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 128x128, 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024 Then the platform specific formats are: Windows XP/7 ICO file containing 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64 and 256x256 ICO design for 32-bit (alpha included) + 8-bit + 4-bit (dithered down automatically—pixel poke only most critical). Only a 32-bit copy of the 256x256 pixel image should be included, and only the 256x256 pixel image should be compressed to keep the file size down. Note that I include the sizes (24x24 and 64x64) for "classic" mode on XP. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511280.aspx#size Production info is in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511280.aspx#development Mac ICNS file format containing 1024x1024, 512x512, 256x256, 128x128, 32x32, 16x16, original format is PNG Info is at http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/IconsImages/IconsImages.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20000967-TP6 Linux Platforms I'm not sure what is needed but having png in all the sizes for the Mac plus the 22x22 seems to be sufficient. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=495250 http://developer.gnome.org/hig-book/stable/icons-types.html.en#application_icons

Just wanted to echo the comments I put on the other defect...the feedback from EclipseCon was universally in favor of the new Splash ("Awesome!", "Cool"...) as well as that this makes a *very* large impression on the community that 4.x in indeed new and cool. Nice work and thanks soooo much !
I have to design the landing page for Juno and I am looking for the source files for the new slash page. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

Moved to 4.2.1. Susan, can we close this (feel free...;-).
We're just waiting for the new icons from the designer. Putting new icons in 4.2.1 doesn't make much sense so moving back to 4.2 M7.
(In reply to comment #62) > Moved to 4.2.1. Susan, can we close this (feel free...;-). Before we close this, I would appreciate if a Photoshop version of the splash screen can be added to this bug.
I just received the icons today. Too big to attach here, will email Paul/Eric. (In reply to comment #64) > (In reply to comment #62) > > Moved to 4.2.1. We've emailed one to Chris but I think I can attach here (I think it's under the size limit). This contains various layers with foreground/background experiments. I opted to send the file with the most detail but if you want a simplified one we can send it.
Created attachment 214143 [details] PSD file (same has been emailed to Chris Guindon)
Assigning this bug to Paul for release/verification into a build. As far as I know, we have all required sizes/formats from the designer now. Once we have released and verified the icons on the various platforms we should be able to close this bug.

Ok, part 1: the images that are set on the window after launch. For some reason when I included the 16x16 images it picked a lower resolution image. When I omit that it shows a nicer higher rez image in the task bar. http://git.eclipse.org/c/platform/eclipse.platform.git/commit/?h=R4_HEAD&id=4ca8971893abab4da3ab816adba65f3e9473e760 Next are the launcher icons which I will need to get Bogdan to commit

What results in 1. new icon shown when starting 3.8 2. old icon replaces new icon shortly afterwards Either Equinox needs to split stream or we decide to use the new icon in 3.8 and 4.2 but have separate splash screens. I prefer the latter as this would also make the life easier for JDT and PDE.
Marking fixed as 4.2 is in good shape. We still have bug 378108 open where we are trying to decide what to do about 3.8.
Verified in M7.
