Description Mats Ahlgren CLA 2010-01-05 15:32:18 EST
Build Identifier: Galileo 20090920-1017

What's going wrong?:
- Many buttons cannot be pushed.
- Update system is not downloading anything.
- Other things may be wrong; these are all the things I noticed after about only 2min of use. Eclipse seems Completely Broken.

Details:
See "steps to reproduce" for more details.

Severity:
Critical - Cannot use Eclipse either normally (random buttons malfunction). Cannot use Eclipse with any plugins. Software seems Completely Broken(tm) after only 2min of use.

Bases already covered:
- I made sure I'm using Sun Java 6 (rather than IcedTea).
- Checked workspace/.metadata/.log -- file does not exist; no errors were reported.
- I occasionally cleared my .metadata between uses.
- I let Eclipse regenerate the .metadata files, closed it and reopened again.
- This is practically a brand new computer. Recent stable Linux install (Suse 11.2). No problems with any other programs.
- No firewall.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
0. Launch eclipse with ./eclipse &
1. Help menu > Install new software
2. Enter name of repository
3. [bug] You will see nothing appear even if connected to the internet
4. Click "Add..." button.
5. [bugs] Attempt to click any of the Edit/Delete/etc. buttons. Nothing happens. Sometimes things freeze a tiny bit.
6. Quit eclipse in normal manner.
7. [bug] Every single tab in terminal (Konsole) locks up, in that cursor appears hollow in each tab.

- Open up Eclipse again.
- File menu > New submenu > Servlet menu item
- Click "Browse..." button
- [bug] nothing happens

Sounds like bug 290395.

I don't seem to be seeing any 'Edit' or 'Delete' buttons. But this may be bug 291257.

Don't think I've heard of this one. But if you're on KDE, it may be a manifestation of the problem described by bug 295203.

When this happens, do you left-click in a hover help window?

Thank you for brilliant insight, that behavior is indeed bug 290395. I was unable to locate that bug with the search (no server response for search).

No offense, but might I ask why this major issue is not backported onto the major release on the website? How can one acquire a stable release?

Sorry, I meant clicking on the link right below the "Add" button.

As yet another example, if one tries to create a File>New>File, and click Advanced... then clicking the Browse or Variables buttons will lock up and make it seem as if the mouse is not being released (as if holding the mouse down on the button). One can alt-tab, but this does not stop the behavior. One can try to click other buttons (e.g. Cancel), but this may or may not work seemingly randomly; that is if one moves back and forth between the buttons clicking them randomly, it will work eventually. The buttons have no effect except Cancel though, which closes the window.

This build was from the Eclipse website; bug 295203 claims the issue has been fixed since Ganymede, which is the version bundled with Suse 11.2. Nevertheless, I cannot click on the "search string" textboxes (I *think* that's what the bug is talking about? but I can't tell from the reproduction steps; if a non-disabled search field requires an open file, I am unable to make a new file).

sidenote: Preferences seem to be carrying over despite killing the .metadata folder.

Addendum: This behavior seems to be occurring on most dialog windows; most buttons except "Cancel" don't seem to work, instead appearing as if they're in the process of being pushed whenever the cursor hovers over them. Having [X]checked a plugin to install, I cannot even hit the Next button.

Oops, for some very strange reason I missed this link. This does indeed seem exactly like bug 291257. Setting environ variable with export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true seemed to fix all problems *including* the must-resize-window bug 290395. This bug could reasonably be marked a duplicate of 291257 I think? I am doing that now.

Thanks very much for the help.

Sidenote:
It would be great to know if I could be using a more recent stable version of Eclipse; and if so, where could I acquire one?

Thanks again.

This bug is fixed in the 3.6 development stream and pending community feedback may be backported for 3.5.2. There are links provided in bug 290395 which outlines where you can get 3.6 builds. The buttons bug has been backported and steps are outlined in bug 291257.

Please direct future comments regarding the buttons bug in bug 291257 and the empty install tree bug in bug 290395.

Bug 295203 has nothing to do with Eclipse and is a bug with QtCurve. Based on the Novell bug it seems it requires manual intervention to resolve the bug. In any case, if your problem is not related to bug 295203 then it may be a manifestation of bug 298770.

Please open a separate bug about this detailing what preferences are "leaking" around.
