Fundamental question is what should we show in details area if there is no sufficient information inside the status. Right now we parse the whole status again, get exception message, child statutes, etc, JFace Error Dialog simply hides details when there is nothing to display, can we do the same? What about more statuses in the dialog, when only some of them has details?
Assigning to correct component.
In p2 we had bugs against us for "useless detail" in the error dialog. We have a lot of methods that return a status and we report that status, but there's no interesting exception detail. (Sometimes the details have been logged in the implementation layers underneath). So I was hoping that if there is no additional detail to be ascertained than what is shown in the top part, then the details button would be disabled.
I think the details button could use some more documentation in general - though I am not sure if this is the right place to discuss that or if I should open a new bug. But I find myself unable to add any information to the details pane, whether I add an Exception, Exception with a cause, or something like a StatusAdapter property IStatusAdapterConstants.EXPLANATION_PROPERTY. So if I can't add anything, it would be better to hide or disable the button rather then duplicate the original error message.
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
