1. Enter Java perspective 2. Perform some operation where the text editing area is split vertically, e.g. synchronize w/rep. Resize the "synchronize w/rep" window to something useful 3. Close "synch w/rep" window 4. Only the text editor shows now 5. Add a syntax error Edit a Java text 6. Press ctrl-s to save 7. The tasks view now covers much of the text editing screen. I frequently save work while I'm editing it(usually subconciously when I'm stopping to think). Although I don't want to get into userinterface work, the simplest solution would be for the tasks view to remember its size.

There seems to be missing steps in the list provided above. Like where does the text editor come from in step #4? When you are in the Java perspective, is the Task view present? It should be at the bottom of the window assuming you have not modified the Java perspective. If not, is it as a fast view (task view icon shown on shortcut bar on left side of window)? A view does remember it's size and location.

I'm sorry, but I do not see where in step 2 you are opening a text editor (and on what). Also, no where in step 2 does is state you close the task view. Please include detail step by step instructions on how to reproduce this problem. Include any preference setting that are different from what is originally ship with Eclipse SDK. And what build are you using?

Rephrasing the problem a bit. The various operations (comparing/editing) fights over screen real-estate, and I have to manually shuffle windows. It would be better if the various windows had better placing rules so I don't have to resize/shuffle windows around. 1. When editing a Java file, I want the "Tasks" list to show ~5 items at any one time. The workspace is easily adjusted thus. 2. When running Team->Synchronize, the area for "Tasks" is replaced by the Team->Synchronzie window. Normally when I do a Team- >Synchronize, I start off with a cramped(tiny) Team->Synchronize window since the "Tasks" list is only 5 items high. 3. "Compare with Repository" replaces the area where a Java file would be edited and leaves the tasks view visible. Why should #2 and #3 use different areas? Suggestion: The entire area right of the Pacakge explorer should be used when comparing(as is the case when I manually close all other windows). *** Date: 11.06.03 09:18 *** System properties: Ok, I think I understand your problem now. When you do a sync with repository, the sync view opens on top of the task view. Because its so small you have to resize it, but that also resizes the Task view (since they are stacked together). When you close the sync view, the task view now is too big and needs to be resized. For release 3.0, one of the items for the Team component is to make the sync view an actual editor (like the compare editor). That will solve your problem. In the mean time, you can do several things. 1) Make the sync view a fast view and size it. 2) Instead of resizing the sync view when staked over task view, just double click on view title to maximize it. Double click again to restore it. 3) Create a "sync perspective" that you can switch to do a sync. That way you can size the sync view to what you want without affecting the layout of your java perspective. There is really nothing else we can do for this.

Note, the new sync editor is not released yet (i.e its not in 3.0 M1). They just started self-hosting on it recently. Then the rest of eclipse will move to it. Once its considered stable, it will be released. I would assume by M2 or M3, there should be something...but I'm just guessing here.
