Start Eclipse with a new workspace, observe that heap status is there by default. Open Preferences and look for the "Show Heap status" preference. It's off! Press Apply or OK and watch the status go away.

Hmm.  I cant reproduce this on XP or OS X.  Is there anything peculiar about your setup?

Still cant reproduce this.  If you can give it a try again and get me some steps that could help please reopen.

Sorry, I've been trying to reproduce it, but the only configuration that gives me that result is my self hosted Eclipse started from "org.eclipse.compare.* and team.*" workspace. If I figure out what's causing it to act like this I will let you know. Until then, let's leave it as it is. Sorry for troubling you.
