Description nikolaus heger CLA 2008-05-30 19:41:21 EDT
It's impossible to tell Eclipse what editor to use for which file.

Here is what I want to do:
- I want to set it so .classpath files are opened in a text editor that can handle / display XML, but *not* the XML editor
- I want to set it so all .xml files open in a text editor rather than the XML editor, with the exception of ant build files which should open in the Ant editor

This is impossible to do. All the file associations are "locked". I don't know why there are two different dialogs for this either - there could be a single one listing files on the left, and editors on the right, and all would be good.

Like so:
XML (generic) ... XML Editor
XML (Ant build file) .... Ant Editor
XML (Eclipse classpath file) ... Text Editor
...
and so on.

I agree that the preference pages should be simplified. We have a good number of related bug reports like this already.

Not sure if we will be able to address this for 3.5 so marking as helpwanted.

Hi - it turns out my outrage over this was largely based on the fact that I didn't see the XML editor has two different edit modes - Design and Source. It was set to "Design" - probably the default - which I find largely useless for XML editing. The "source" view is what I really wanted. The source view works great, it's wonderful. I would make it the default, really, but that is a minor complaint.

My complaint about the difficulty of matching file types to editors remains intact though. The concept of "locked" editor settings needs to go away.

Remy is now responsible for watching the [EditorMgmt] component area.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
