There is a general revisting of the editor registry to be done at some point.

Some of the issues are:

1) Editor mappings that are defined in plugin.xml will show up again any time 
a plugin is restarted.
2) Deleting a mapping using the preference page will not be reflected in the 
Open On menu 
3) All mappings are currently global - we should investigate making mappings 
by project or nature
4) Editors are often used in place of views if people want multiple of the 
same type - is this a reasonable decision
5) You cannot edit files not in a project
6) File extensions are not enough - editors could also use MIME types etc.
7) Hidden tabs are difficult to use
8) Default editor and system editor could be the thing.
9) Hopping around the navigator due to closing an editor
