Description Gail Murphy CLA 2008-02-22 13:01:20 EST
I often "lose" bugs as I'm going through reading new incoming bugs. I open up the bug to read it in the editor (which causes it to disappear from the task list) and then I lose it in the tabs I have open. Or worse, I close it too quickly and then realize I needed to take action on it.

The management of how many task editors are open helps but it would be helpful to have some support for easily getting back to it.

The function I most want is "undo".

Keeping the bug in the list is obviously problematic because of the query nature of categories. But perhaps with a different presentation (i.e., all incoming) it might be possible not to take it out of the list too quickly.

Gail, as a workaround you could use the editor history from File menu, though it only keep last 15 editors.

I've been complaining about this issue for quite while and been suggesting to provide guaranteed visibility to all bugs that have editors opened, or remove "read" flag in task list only after the task editor is closed.

I also like your idea about "undo". Firefox have similar feature for reopening closed tabs (Ctrl-Shift-T) and I often try to use it in Eclipse and swear every time it doesn't work there. :-)

There has been quite a lot of feedback on this being a problem ever since we added the focusing. The weirdness is that it makes it hard to understand when a task is visible in the Task List because the open state is very different than the scheduled or incoming state. But I do think that we should figure out how to address this for 3.0. For example, we could considering it to be another kind of thing like an incoming state, and change the incoming icon to be an icon that shows that it's one of the open editors. With focused views we have the luxury of having what's in the view correspond to the open editors for the most part, so with the Task List we should be able to extend the guaranteed visibility rules in a similar way. We just need to do so in a way that's obvious.

Comment by Gabriel Hauber on bug 257454:

Ok ? I had ?Focus on work week? enabled. I disabled it, then changed the ?filter priority lower than? to the highest, then back to the lowest, and all the issues that had previously disappeared, reappeared. To verify, I turned ?focus on work week? back on. The issues all remained, until I double clicked an issue to open it ? it would open, but disappear from the list. This is not very intuitive behaviour. If the issues should be hidden, then they shall be hidden when the ?focus on work week? is selected.

Also, if I then switch to ?Scheduled View? while ?Focus on work week? is selected, the ?Unscheduled? category is still visible, but if I open any issues in the Unscheduled list, the one opened immediately disappears from the list. Again, if unscheduled items should not be shown at all while ?focus on work week? is selected, then hide the ?unscheduled? section altogether. Showing the list of unscheduled tasks but making them disappear is very odd behaviour imho.

We have addressed this by adding a new button to the task editor's toolbar that allows you to schedule a task for today with one click, causing it to appear and jump to the top of the query after it has disappeared, giving it a "pin" or "star" feel. This seems like the best compromise for retaining the benefit of not showing unscheduled incomings while allowing a very quick way to bring the task back into the Task List if it is interesting.

I'm still wondering if it's better to schedule the task for this week instead of today, since this might cause people to make their task list too blue. However, the drop-down provides a quick way of scheduling for this week as well, and the action would not be as obvious if it did not schedule for today.
