Description Philipe Mulet CLA 2002-07-18 09:10:50 EDT
Build R2.0

Quite often (several times during a day), my Java perspectives are losing
partially some of their toolbars, usually the launch run/debug one and/or the
Java creation ones too.

The only workaround is to reset the current perspective, and then of course of
layout changes are lost...

This is quite annoying, but I haven't figured yet the steps to cause it to
happen.

Does the whole toolbar area disappear, or only certain groups (cool items)?
Could it be a layout problem (i.e. they get minimized and warped to the right
edge)?
Does doing a reset toolbar layout fix it?
Can you include a screen shot when it happens next?
Comment 2 Philipe Mulet CLA 2002-07-25 08:06:09 EDT
Group of icons are disappearing, they do not seem to be collapsed anywhere.
Usually the debug icons (run/debug) group or the java wizards group (create
project/class/interface/...) are disappearing.

I only tried to reset the perspective to get them back, I'll try the toolbar
layout reset next time it occurs.

Actually something similar just happened, see below the attached screenshot.

In this case, the toolbar got changed, without me ever playing with its
setting. Now I am guessing it occurs due to frequently switching perspective
(java<->debug) as Java development goes by.

Tried then the reset toolbar layout, and it did work. Now I should not have to
do it of course, unless I explicitely changed the layout by myself.

Philippe, the attached screen snap has two windows for the same perspective.
When you switch between these windows, is this when you "lose items" or is it
when you are switching between different perspectives? Do you typically work
with perspectives in different windows? Do you re-arrange the items on your
toolbar when you work?

What exactly do you mean above by "the toolbar got changed, without me ever
playing with its setting"? I see the snap - do you mean that you opened a new
window on the given perspective and the cool items were minimized (i.e.,
chevrons) or do you mean something else?

One more thing, have you seen this behavior since R2.0 or post R2.0 (i.e., in
builds after R2.0)?
Comment 8 Philipe Mulet CLA 2002-07-29 11:28:17 EDT
I am using now build 200207161002, but I think I had the issue on a plain 2.0
build as well.

Usually I notice this when switching in between my Java perspectives, but I
don't know if the fact they internally switch to debug perspective
(individually) has to do with it or not (I thought it was, but might be fact I
have 2 windows).

Okay to the above notation - I will try to recreate the problem. Could you
also please answer the other part of my entry ==>

What exactly do you mean above by "the toolbar got changed, without me ever
playing with its setting"? I see the snapshot - do you mean that you opened a
new window on the given perspective and the cool items were minimized (i.e.,
chevrons) or do you mean something else?

I usually work with these 2 windows, each hosting Java/Resource/Debug
perspectives. I keep working in either one or the other window.

At some point, I noticed that my toolbar run&debug buttons were gone. I
actually did not notice they got minimized, but as you mention it they seem to
be on my screenshot.

Some magic minimizing seems to be occurring sometimes for free.

Renaming PR to indicate minimizing behavior, which I assume is what was
initially meant by "losing tool items".

Still not sure how this is occurring. CoolItems do get unnecessarily minimized
when you move the cool items by hand. I haven't seen any "magic" minimizing
though.

Philippe - do you typically rearrange the cool items on the coolbar? Do you
customize your perspective to add new cool items?
Comment 12 Lynne Kues CLA 2002-08-08 13:16:32 EDT
Unable to recreate, but the fix for [Bug 21764] should stop this from
occurring. Marking as fixed for now. Reopen the PR if you still see the
behavior after getting builds > 20020808. If you do see the behavior, it would
be helpful to have the steps to recreate.
