I'd like the option of opening each editor in it's own window. Used to do this VAJ and in multi- monitor setups it can be very useful. The effect can be generated by opening lots of new windows and killing every frame but the editor but a convenience feature would be nice.
Ummm, > generated by opening lots of new windows and killing every frame but the editor should read < generated by choosing Window | New Window , navigating to the resource in question and then closing all non-editor frames But I'm sure you understood the first time.
editors are managed by the workbench - moving to platform UI
For consideration post 2.0. Note that you can do the following: - open Java perspective - close all views - Window / Save Perspective As / "Empty" Now you can do: - Window / New Window - Window / Open Perspective / Empty (not necessary if the previous window had the Empty perspective active) - if it was created from the Java perspective, you can still do Ctrl+Shift+T to open a type

I would like to use Eclipse in dual monitor environment by opening a window for each monitor. The issue that currently limits me from doing this comfortably is that the outline view (hierarchy view, etc.) in one window is not linked up to the active editor in another. Were I able to configure Eclipse to handle this, I'd have all the dual-monitor support I needed. I'm not sure how I would communicate to Eclipse that a double click in the package view is to open an editor in my second window. Perhaps if new windows were named I could specify a workbench preference to the effect of "use window X for editors." While it would be mildly annoying to have to open and position both windows and then set this preference, even this much functionality would be helpful. Eventually support for saved window layouts could be added so that on opening eclipse windows would be reopened and positioned and the preference would not need to be reset.
John-Mason: try detached views.
I think there would be another use case for such (or a similar) feature: RCP apps might want to get the same behavior as MS Office uses when new documents are opened: - If a new file gets opened and the single existing window is empty (= has no editor opened), open that file editor in the current window. - In every other case: Open a new (workbench)Window and open the file editor in that window. => The result would be that at max. 1 editor per workbenchWindow is allowed.
Any news on this? Detached views don't work for the editor pane and in any case it would be better if I could tear off each file.
I've just tried to use Eclipse in a multiple monitor environment too, and whilst it's possible to detach each of the view panels and arrange them on the other monitor it's a bit of a pain; it would be considerably easier to detach the editor panel and have that on the other monitor to the workbench. So add my vote to adding this functionality, if it's practical.

*crickets* Any thoughts Eclipse team?
Probably not for 3.4. Seems like something to keep in mind for 4.0 though...
Remy is now responsible for watching the [EditorMgmt] component area.
In 4.3 opening editors in their own window works for me on a dual monitor system. Closing as WORKSFORME.
