If Windows is abnormally shutdown when Eclipse is running, on next startup, it hangs. Only work-around is to delete .metadata, and replace it with an earlier version of .metadata (which I saved manually).
Hmmm, I've had this happen to me and, except for a message identifying the abnormal state, I haven't seen this. Was there anything particularly funky about the state you were in before the 'incident' (i.e. open database connections...)?
Does this still occur? Please see http://wiki.eclipse.org/How_to_report_a_deadlock for instructions on how to get a stack dump when this occurs.
Please reopen this if you are able to reproduce it and provide a stack dump.
