Description Simon Arsenault CLA 2001-10-10 22:23:22 EDT
From looking at the Edit menu, it is not obvious
why there is a Find/Replace and a Search item.
Search seems to apply to all resources, not just
the editor with focus. Maybe this item would be
	better in the File menu?

Or maybe move the Search menu item into the Workbench menu? For later
consideration

The GNOME Human Interface Guidelines recommends that in interfaces where a
"Search" toplevel menu is added, Find/Replace functionality be migrated from
Edit to this menu. When people see a prominent category displayed that would
logically contain their desired item (such as Search) they frequently do not
continue to look further (and thus may not find Find, I know it took me a few
days to discover this).

The additional problem here is providing a distinction between "Search..."
functionality and "Find" functionality. I think it might be better to find a
logical way to merge these two functions rather than trying to make unnatural
distinctions. The "Search" menu is, in general confusing. The menu items are not
helpful without actually opening the dialogues to see what htey contain, and
e.g. Help... probably shouldn't be in this menu at all (searching help is
traditionally put under the "Help" menu, Search is usually reserved for user
documents/data).

Search now has its own menu. Find/Replace should stay where it is an edit
function (as it is on the popup for the text editor). For the sake of
consistency it should be left where it is.
