Not for 2.0 - I am just opening this while I think of it.  :)

- click on the search tool
- go to the File Search tab
- type "the" in the "Containing text:" field  (no quotes)
- click Search

You will get hits for "the", "them", "then", "their", "there, "these", etc.

Would be nice if you could click a checkbox that narrowed the search to whole 
words only, like you can in the Find/Replace dialog.

the only reason why we did not do it 2.0 is that the StringMatcher doesn't 
support it. Agree to defer

There should be only one StringMatcher in the Platform and that should 
support "whole word" matching.

Moving to Platform-Search (via Platform-UI because Bugzilla is dumb)

This can now be considered since 2.2. is SDK 1.4.x based and offers a RegEx package.

Search now supports regular expressions (the pattern in your example would be: 
\bthe\b
