The find bar in the task list takes up valuable screen real-estate. Suggestions for changing the current layout and have been made in bug 144161 (comment 28 and following). Investigate feasible solutions for the next release cycle.
from bug#186493 comment#17 What if we removed the Find: [ ] and replaced it with a search toggle button in the tool bar that upon depressing reveals the Find: [ ] in the current location with the cursor in the find text box? Web browsers are working this way and is seems to work well while not taking up so much screen real estate. It requires the same number of clicks and could be revealed upon random typing within the Task List just as the find box gets focus now.
Also from bug 186493: note that there is usability benefit to having things anchored in the UI (i.e. our current Toolbar style approach or Mozilla's Find) over popups, becaues in general it is good to design usals to be modeless (any kind of popup is modal, hence either needs to block like IE's or requires a focus/unfocus mechanism such as F2 or click in/out).

Text has been merged into the field itself so I believe we don't have any work left for this task. Steffen, over to you to either mark resolved or....
