In the Resource perspective, in the Navigator view, I selected directories containing 515MB in 24,400 files, right-clicked, then choose "Delete". It took about a minute or two before the progress dialog poped up. It would be better if the progress dialog came up straight away. Version 3.3M6.
This sounds like a bug not an enhancement
I can't replicate this in 3.3 M7. There were some Undo issues fixed in M7 and this might be related. Can you possibly retry with M7?
