Description Jonathan Edwards CLA 2007-04-11 17:07:52 EDT
Build ID: 3.2.2

Vista will not unzip the 3.2.2 release. Complains of path too long on runtime_registry_compatibility in the plugin org.eclipse.core.runtime.compatibility.registry_3.2.1.R32x_v20060907.

This is a fresh factory-install of Vista on a Thinkpad received today. Don't understand why I would be the only one getting this error.

Are you hitting the 255 character limit? If so please try installing it in a different directory. Also, have you seen the click through?

Comment 2 Jonathan Edwards CLA 2007-04-11 20:45:07 EDT
Yes, I think this is the path size limit. I can't even unzip into c:\e.
Comment 3 Alex Blewitt CLA 2007-04-12 08:03:20 EDT
Are you using WinZip, or are you using Vista's built in unarchiving tool?
Comment 4 Jonathan Edwards CLA 2007-04-12 08:16:23 EDT
I am using Vista's built-in support for zip archives.
Comment 5 Kim Moir CLA 2007-04-12 10:44:15 EDT
The path is not too long if you install it in c:\e

Look at my install 94 characters.

D:\3.2.2\eclipse\plugins\org.eclipse.core.runtime.compatibility.registry_3.2.1.R32x_v20060907
-bash-3.00$ cat test.txt | wc -c
94

Please try unzipping with another unzip utility such as winzip. Also, please note the caveats in the 3.2.2 readme regarding installing on Vista.

http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/readme_eclipse_3.2.2.html

From the 3.2.2 readme
Installing Eclipse in Program Files directory on Vista

By default, Microsoft Windows Vista does not allow user level accounts to write files in the "Program Files" directory. This can prevent Eclipse from starting when installed in the "Program Files" directory, because Eclipse stores configuration data by default in its install directory. Either of the following workarounds can be used to avoid this problem:

    * Install Eclipse outside the "Program Files" directory
    * Instruct Eclipse to store configuration data outside the "Program Files" directory using the -configuration command line argument.

The problem will not occur when running Eclipse as the Administrator user, but this is not recommended because it compromises the Windows Vista security model. (bug 168445) https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=168445
Comment 6 Jonathan Edwards CLA 2007-04-12 11:16:10 EDT
I don't know what the path length limit is, but Vista will not unzip Eclipse.

Winzip works.

Thanks, closing.
Comment 8 Kim Moir CLA 2007-04-12 16:56:23 EDT
Actually I will reopen this bug, this info should be added to the 3.3 readme re Vista.

Thanks for opening this bug.
Comment 9 Eric Roberts CLA 2007-05-11 10:33:07 EDT
I'm having the same problem. I am unzipping to d:\eclipse and getting the same error. I Will try Winzip and see if that helps, though I don't see why it should matter. This is on Vista Ultimate.
Comment 10 Kim Moir CLA 2007-05-28 17:29:54 EDT
John, do we usually add issues like this to our readme? This is more of an issue with the operating system rather than eclipse itself.
Comment 11 John Arthorne CLA 2007-05-29 11:27:19 EDT
Yes, it is a problem with Vista itself and not with Eclipse. While it would be unusual, I don't see a problem with documenting this in the readme. Plenty of first time users will run into it. See also bug 166292. I can write something for this if you like.
Comment 12 Kim Moir CLA 2007-05-29 11:34:49 EDT
Sure, that would be great. I didn't quite know how to phrase it. Thanks!

Eclipse & WTP have always unzipped using the default bundled unzip tool on Windows without problems. Given that the vast majority of Eclipse users run Eclipse on Windows it would seem odd that this problem be left unfixed and the *new* requirement to use a third-party unzip tool be simply mentioned as a comment in the release notes.

Is there a plan to fix this in 3.3 (WTP 2.0)?
Comment 14 John Arthorne CLA 2007-06-19 16:56:42 EDT
No, we don't plan to fix Vista's broken unzip implementation.

I noticed this is already documented on this page which is linked to the download page:
