The new DataBinding 1.0 API (for 3.3) includes support for binding to standard Java Beans via BeansObservables. In theory, this should allow DataBinding to be used with Swing controls very easily, but I don't think anyone has investigated this in detail. I suspect that there will be Swing-specific issues integrating with the more complex controls, like JTable and JTree. It would also be interesting to compare the functionality provided by JFace DataBindings with other binding frameworks, such as JSR 295 (http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=295), JGoodies Binding (https://binding.dev.java.net/), SwingLabs Binding (https://databinding.dev.java.net/), YasBinding (https://yasbinding.dev.java.net/), and Spring Rich-Client (http://spring-rich-c.sourceforge.net/). IMHO, this would be a great opportunity for broader community involvement.
Apparently Oracle also has a binding framework, as mentioned in JSR 227 (http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=227).
The latest info I can find on JSR 295 is here: http://weblogs.java.net/blog/zixle/archive/2007/02/update_on_beans.html I've posted a comment there requesting the author's participation on this bugzilla item.
After taking a look at this I've concluded that I'm way out of practice with Swing and don't know how to use it any more. If this bug is to move forward I will need some community feedback, namely: * Which features are important to support * Assigning a priority to each feature to make sure the most important things are done first * Per feature, helping us understand the relevant APIs and the appropriate way to use them. Most features I imagine will be fairly straight forward, it is just a matter of knowing what needs to be done and what APIs to use to accomplish it.
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
