Description Markus Oellinger CLA 2006-11-26 15:48:22 EST
My proposal is:
on demand formatting of files. When a file is loaded, one formatting is applied, when it is saved, another one is applied. This has the following advantages:
- the onSave format rules are the company formatting rules, very restrictive (80 columns, replace tabs by spaces, etc.)
- the onLoad format rules are the personal formatting rules.

The advantage would be that there can be company formatting standards, even very restricting ones that allow reading the code in a text terminal, but the individual developer can see the code the way he wants it to.

In a company like ours (7000 devs) it is hard to come up with company standards commonly accepted by everyone and this feature would eliminate all discussions. The individual can see the code the way he or she is most comfortable with while the company standards are still considered.
