The should be a way (e.g. via a system property) for clients to specify which cache adapter implementation is used for the static singleton; this would enable clients to make optimizations via a custom (derived) implementation. It should also be easier to customize aspects of the cache adapter, such as which map implementation is used and which inverse cross referencer is used.
