While looking into bug 151604 and bug 155415, it seems like there is some inconsistency in how the selection is treated for object contributions and viewer contributions.  If the contribution uses adaptable="true", then the action's selectionChanged method gets the converted selection in the case of an object contribution, but the unconverted selection in the case of a viewer contribution.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.
