Before there was a request (not by me) to make the spash version independent.
The new 3.3M1 dated 10-Aug-2006 has a splash with version 3.2

I think this is as much a legal and marketing as it is a practical issue. Product versions are significant to users but you are really talking about the build id (which is unique for each build). This id is accessible via Help>About. I know it is not as handy as seeing it in your face in the splash screen.

Note though that visual designers and lawyers may argue that the version number visual design is part of the overal image and should not be made a widget that changes all the time. Perhaps what you are looking for is a smaller SWT label somewhere with a build id.
