Description MG CLA 2006-07-18 18:50:10 EDT
I have a file .project in my project. I have a .project file in my cvs repository, I choose synch with repository and it shows the .project file as incoming. I rclick and choose override and update and I am given a dialog that says "overwrite local changes?" I choose yes and then I get an error saying "A Resource already exists on disk"

I wasn't able to reproduce your case. Here's what I did:

1. Checked in a copy of org.eclipse.ftp into my local cvs server

2. With a new workspace, I checked out two versions of org.eclipse.ftp (named org.eclipse.ftp and org.eclipse.ftp2)

3. Modified the .project file in org.eclipse.ftp and committed it

4. Selected org.eclipse.ftp2 and chose Team>Synchronize with Repository; have 1 incomign change (.project file)

4. Right click on the project and chose "Override and Update" (I also tried just selecting the .project file)

5. Prompted to Overwrite local changes->Yes->changes updated properly.

From your description, it seems what might have happened is that your workspace might have gotten out of sync with what's on disk. That message will pop up if you already have a .project file on disk, but doesn't show up in the navigator. Try doing a refresh on the project and things should work. Please reopen this bug with further details if this doesn't address your problem. Thanks!

What you say is correct. I believe the resource was out of synch.

I think the workflow in this case is incorrect, if you choose overwrite local with incoming then it should overwrite independent of whether the resource has changed without eclipse realizing it, after all you did choose "overwrite".

If that is inconsistent with eclipse practices then perhaps changing the error message to indicate the true problem "that the resource is out of synch with the workspace" is the best solution.

I think the best place to start would be to improve the error message. However, we probably won't have time to look at this for 3.3.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
