I often have to enter free text, and sometimes I need to be able to copy and paste that free text.  There is no way to do that in the diagram editor.

This is by we do not allow free text widget copy and paste. Current design all other diagram widgets (figures/nodes) do not support copy/paste functionality. 

Marking as resovled.  If this necessary feature submit an RFE.
