Description Matthew Hatem CLA 2005-09-07 17:25:45 EDT
Applications like Outlook and Thunderbird open documents/editors in new Windows
unlike Eclipse based applications where documents typically open in a tabbed
interface. We have a requirement to support a similar model in our Eclipse
based application.

Currently there is no convenient way to open documents/editors/views as new
Windows. The new Window should only present the user with the Editor or View
part and the Menu, Toolbar and Statusbar items associated with the part.

Would there be any relationship with the originating window?

E.g. currently detached views are still considered part of the originating
workbench page. If you detach the Outline or Properties view, it still tracks
the active editor in the main view.

Would it suffice to open a new window with a different personality then open the
editor or view in that?

I can't think of a good reason for this. I don't think these relationships
exist for applications like Thunderbird or Outlook. I think tracking selection
for a new window (not detached view) would be confusing.

This is actually what we are doing now. However this feels cumbersome. We need
to have a dedicated empty or blank perspective and some common "Personality"
window. Ultimately each RCP application needs to invent this framework. I
think RCP applications would benefit from the Eclipse Workbench supporting these
features directly.

Maybe JDT users want this feature too ;)

There are currently no plans to do this but we would be happy to look at a patch

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
