3.1

Minimized views keep showing their toolbar with all kinds of distracting
buttons. I think that minimizing views should hide their toolbars (maybe even
their min/max buttons, or even the close button). This would clean up the look
of a workbench with many minimized view stacks.

Rationale: most buttons on a minimized view are not needed as it would not be
clear what they do anyway. Many (all?) views restore themselves anyway and
ignore the click when I press a toolbar item when its minimzed (e.g. the Console
does that).

Removing the toolbar would allow to to have many minimized view stacks that do
not distract the user. This would become even more important if vertical views
get vertical view tabs when minimized (see bug 88239 comment 7 for a mock up,
and imagine how much cleaner it would look without the view toolbars).

As a reference, consider how acrobat reader lays out its side panes when they
are minimized - the tabs are very slim and do not distract at all.

I like!

What about something akin to the Mac OS X dock when minimized -- as the mouse rolls over, the object enlarges to give the user a better chance of seeing small hit targets.

The drawback is that unless it's done only at the natural edges of the window, the behavior can be non-linear (always reminded me of the rule for differentiability in calculus where the limit from the left equals the limit from the right).

That said it does a good job at assisting users to the most probable target at the small expense of initial surprise.

Is this still a problem in 3.3?

Yes.

The entire behaviour of minimize/maximize will be changed by the 3.3 presentation.

Sorry Paul, but this is still an issue for RCP applications with their own window layout (and thus no trim managed by the Workbench), because they won't be able to use the new presentation. I understand that this is not a high priority item for you, so I'm marking it as helpwanted for now.

In the RCP application that I'm working on, if I maximize a view everything behaves normally, but if I close and reopen the application, toolbars of the other minimized views are displayed over the maximized view. Extra toolbars disappears when changing the perspective or sometimes the view. Could this happen because of this bug?

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
