Started the eclipse the first time, subdirectory "workspace" is not created.
Instead, .metadata and any new project will be created in the root directory,
say e:.

Did you happen to delete the string supplied by the initial launch dialog (the workbench chooser)?

this sounds like a dup of bug 101605, as it is the same reporter in the same
time frame.  
Benjamin please confirm that this is true.

I did made 2 reports around the same time. I'm new to eclipse, and found problem
in creating workspace under 3.0.1 so switching to 3.0.2.

The 2 reports are differnt - one for creating workspace under 3.0.1 and one for
naming workspace under 3.0.2.

Is this still an issue?  I'm not sure we ever understood the issue to begin with. If this is still a problem please reopen it with steps to reproduce.
