Description Tony A. Emond CLA 2005-06-16 22:12:48 EDT
This is a very odd problem. I'm running Slackware 10.1 with a recent kernel and
J2SDK 1.5.0. The problem I describe has occurred in both Windowmaker and Gnome.

After installing Eclipse into /usr/local/ I clicked on the "Workbench Basics"
link that appears on the welcome page. Bluefish launched with an empty window
(instead of either the help browser or default browser). I found the same
happening if I clicked any of the help links.

I couldn't find Bluefish mentioned in any of the preferences categories. I
checked everywhere on my system to see if bluefish had been set up as a default
editor of any type, but that wasn't the case. I can't even remember the last
time I used it.

Anyway, having exhausted all other avenues I uninstalled Bluefish, restarted
Eclipse, and everything works properly (my default browser launches and displays
the help). If I reinstall Bluefish the problem arises again.

Therefore it would appear that Eclipse conflicts with Bluefish, but I have
absolutely no idea how that can even happen. Has anyone else experienced this?

This seems to occur with 3.1RC2, but not with 3.0 versions.

In 3.1 help delegates to UI browser support for opening browsers.
Tony, you can use Window->Preferences->General->Web Browser preference page to
configure (and add) browsers if the default set does not work on your system.
The default external browser is a system browser, so whatever program is
associated with .html extension. This seems to be Bluefish in your case.
Please switch prefernces to another external browser, or if there are no other
browsers, click "add" and define one.

Hi Tony,

Can you confirm that Bluefish is configuring itself as the default browser on
your system (e.g. by launching .html file from the command line), and that you
can use Dejan's comments? If so, I'd like to close this bug since everything is
working correctly.

Moving bug to remind state, since there has been no response for several months.
This appears to be a system configuration issue and not an Eclipse bug.

As of now 'LATER' and 'REMIND' resolutions are no longer supported.
Please reopen this bug if it is still valid for you.
