Re: [science-iwg] travis+eclipse project

Torkild,

Is Travis-CI an official alternative for some Eclipse projects especially those using GitHub?
Believe it or not, the management (and probably some servers, too) of Travis-CI are in Berlin: https://blog.travis-ci.com/

So maybe some of them are involved with the JUG Berlin-Brandenburg anyway or could be made aware of a meeting between the JUG and JCP EC while in Berlin: http://www.meetup.com/de-DE/jug-bb/events/230516734/ to speak with them.

I know, at least JSR 354, one of the topics on the agenda uses Travis-CI and so far we had rather good experience with it. The only open/shared alternatives at least for Java and other languages I can think of is Circle CI. I use if for a couple of other Open Source projects. The number of projects using it may be slightly smaller, not sure, at least Travis was around longer.

Regards,
Werner

Ok, but as mentioned there should be a Science TLP to complement this WG
soon, so that means, if approved future project proposals like
https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/technology.january
may look along the lines of
https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/science.january (hypothetical URL;-)

Would any project like January, BioClipse or others have the option to
switch like we saw e.g. Mylyn and others did from Technology to Tools,
Runtime etc.?

Mylyn from what I remember never changed the URL (except maybe when it was
renamed from "Mylar") so it seems likely existing projects may change a TLP
without changing or losing the project URL. That's among STEM's desires to
keep, otherwise especially visibility in the scientific world would be
welcome by the STEM project.

Though the project lead at IBM is based in the US, there are several key
committers in Berlin, so should it be of interest to meet with Mike while
he's likely in town next month, Matthias and others at BfR (see
http://wiki.eclipse.org/The_STEM_Development_Team) would be happy to have a
chat if there's time.

Hello,

These are a list of the eclipse travis builds, https://travis-ci.org/eclipse. We have been using travis for dawnsci, richbeans and our prototype scanning project (which is on https://travis-ci.org/DiamondLightSource) for a while.

Is this ok / a good idea for eclipse projects? Any issues with not using the standard Jenkins approach like Triquetrum does? Perhaps permission has to be asked from the bureaucracy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoRoaNVho54

Thanks a mill.

Matt

Hi Matt,

I?m pretty sure that there are no limitations on what build technology or service you use. Travis-CI should be perfectly good. Of course you don?t get the integration with Gerrit and Bugzilla, but as long as your?re happy with what GitHub offers you should not have to do any changes in the stack. There is a discussion on the pros and cons of using GitHub here https://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/eclipse.org-committers/msg01095.html

Best regards,
Torkild
