Re: [science-iwg] Science Fall Release

All,
I've started a wiki page for the Science Autumn 2016 Release at https://wiki.eclipse.org/Science_WG/Autumn_2016_Release

Currently, I've listed ChemClipse, EAVP, ICE, January and Triquetrum as participating.

Philip, I'm not sure if ChemClipse intends to participate, but I felt it was better to be inclusive than exclusive.  Please let me know if you don't intend to participate.

Having a project listed there is a commitment to consider the possibility of releasing at the same time.  Listing a project as part of the release need not be considered cast in stone.

Please feel free to update the wiki as you see fit.  Also, feel free to ignore the wiki entirely! :-)  I'm mainly using it to keep notes on what needs to be done for Triquetrum.  The wiki says:

Todo:
* Please add or remove your project here (in alphabetical order)
* Linking to Eclipse Wiki pages and GitHub or Bugzilla issues is preferred.
* Each project should consider
** determining a release name (0.1?) (See below)
** Collecting up IP issues, perhaps in a GitHub or Bugzilla issue
*  When ready, asking for release review.

The near term goal is to fulfill Wayne's recommendation:
I recommend that the Science Working Group make a master list of all the open CQs that are required for the coordinated autumn release that we can present to the IP Team along with your last question. This should be a relatively easy query if we have a list of participating projects. Giving the IP Team a clear picture of what needs to be accomplished is the best way of getting that question answered.
So, the first step is to get an updated list of projects that are considering participation in the release.

The second step is for each project that is participating to generate a list of open CQs.

After that, we can update Wayne and the IP Team with the list and get their feedback.

BTW - I have a slight preference for "Science Autumn 2016 Release" because I prefer "Autumn" over "Fall".   If anyone feels strongly, we could discuss this.

Everyone,

The intention of this release is just that all participating projects release at the same time, not that we integrate everything into the same workbench. Hopefully we build that workbench for the Oxygen (Neon+1) release in June 2017.

Hi Jonah,

we normally do our release end of July. It's the OpenChrom release, so less review work is necessary than doing a ChemClipse release hosted by Eclipse. Anyhow, I could try to switch the code base to Neon (4.6) after releasing the official OpenChrom Community Edition. I think, it's then possible to create a ChemClipse release until October.

Philip

Hi Philip,

Would it be possible for ChemClipse to release at the same time? i.e.
from a marketing perspective rather than the ability to install all of
the features in the same Eclipse installation?

It seems to me not worth the effort of backporting ChemClipse in its
entirety to work with legacy e4xmi.

Thanks,
Jonah

Hi Jay,

I like the approach :-).

We would really like to participate with ChemClipse in the autumn release.
But I don't know if it will work smoothly with ChemClipse cause we migrated
to Eclipse e4 in mixed mode (since Eclipse 4.1) - back then, I thought this
would be easier. We use an own Application.e4xmi and several fragment.e4xmi
files for each plugin.

One approach would be to extend the legacy e4xmi somehow. But there's
another problem regarding the toolbar items. Normally, CoreExpression can be
used in the e4xmi files to enable/disable them. But there are still some
bugs in the platform:

http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/t/452550
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=400217
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=457214
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=432856

In summary, I'll fiddle around with the legacy e4xmi and I'll try to find a
solution for this issue. Hence, don't count on ChemClipse for the autumn
release so far. But I'll try my best.

Cheers,
Philip

Everyone,

At our annual meeting we decided that we would like to move forward with a
"fall release" for some subset of Science Working Group projects. This would
be similar to the simultaneous release for Eclipse as whole, but just for
our stuff. Hopefully this will start to get us prepared to join future
simultaneous releases.

So far I have the following projects on the list for the release:
ICE
EAVP
Triquetrum
January

This "release" will be a coordinated release in which all participating
projects
1.) prepare a working version of their product that can be dubbed release
X.Y.Z.
2.) complete all IP, release review and other Foundation requirements.
3.) all artifacts for participating projects are released at the individual
project sites and through links at science.eclipse.org.
4.) do whatever else Wayne Beaton says we have to do. ;-)

Release day will be 21st October 2016. I will work with Wayne to figure out
other important dates, such as Release Candidate dates, that we need to keep
in mind.

Would anyone else like to join in?

Jay
