Re: [science-iwg] Fwd: [ice-dev] Got your message

Hi,

Yes.

The docker instance is based on Fedora 23 which provides broadwayd and GTK3 out of the box.

FYI, everyone who is familiar with docker should be able to have this working for them (no matter what OS, docker should run it) in two steps:

docker pull sopotc/eclipse-broadway
docker run -it sopotc/eclipse-broadway

The above is for vanilla eclipse (some N build that will be pulled on build). If you want ice pull and run sopotc/ice-broadway . Both are on dockerhub so they should be found automatically.

Regards,
Sopot

Hi Jay,

looks nice :-).
Does it use broadwayd and GTK3?

Everyone,

As many of you know, we've been collaborating with Sopot Cela and the Red Hat team to get ICE running on the web. This is a screenshot of ICE running in a Docker container and being accessed in the browser. You can see a plot there of, I think, some simulated nuclear fuel heating up over time.

Thought you would find it interesting. Feel free to share.

We got it working. Here's a screenshot with a CSV graph.

Alex,

No matter what path in the container I try, I'm always getting "no such directory." I know it's a problem with the container path, as I get a different error message when I set the source path to something that doesn't exist.

Just talked to Robert about this. Gonna try to do a docker cp to get a CSV file from his linux machine to the running container, then get some pretty screenshots.

Jay,

Here are screenshots showing MOOSE and Vibe in Broadway from Docker. However, whatever machine its running on didn't have a CSV file and I couldn't pull ICETests to get one, as the Git perspective doesn't show any branches when I try to clone a repo, so I couldn't get one featuring a graph.

Robert,

Ah, I see. Okay, so we have to do it the way that Sopot is doing it - install it in Docker from the .zip file.

That's a nice security feature actually.

Jay,

I've tried installing ICE, but can't get it working. Eclipse requires a restart to finish the installation, but, after closing, Eclipse never comes back up. When I restart docker, I get a fresh Eclipse window in Broadway, with ICE not installed, the update site not present in the "install new software" window, and Eclipse opening with the Welcome view, as if it had never been opened before. I think that none of Eclipse's data is being saved from one session to the next, or at least that I'm not getting Docker to read the saved data from wherever it is.

Sopot and Robert,

Alex's link is broken. The actual link for the p2 site is

http://eclipseice.ornl.gov/downloads/ice/stable-nightly/latest/p2

and the link for the zip distribution is up one directory

http://eclipseice.ornl.gov/downloads/ice/stable-nightly/latest

What's the software site for ICE? http://eclipseice.ornl.gov ? Eclipse is giving an error about not finding a software site.

I'll try it out on Windows once I'm finished with my tutorial section.

Robert,

That looks awesome! Thanks!

Did you try installing ICE in it using the update site, maybe opening a graph or something?

I'm looking for really great screenshot so that I can distribute it in our social network, but I would like for it so show something of ICE in there. It would be great to have three screenshots showing MOOSE, VIBE and a plot. Do you think you can get those easily or should we put that off for now?

Sopot,

That's awesome! I've CC'ed the ICE dev list. Robert and I will try this out.

Alex might too - he's a big Docker guy.

I would be very interested in how you got it all working in Docker. Yesterday I just saw that Che works with a Docker stack composed of Java and Ubuntu. I had previously read that it was difficult to get Java working in Docker, so I'm very curious.

I'm fine thanks. Thanks for getting back to me.

I wanted to inform you that I finally got the time to package a docker instance with eclipse on broadway on fedora 23.

You can do 'docker pull sopotc/eclipse-broadway' and after the pull do 'docker run -it sopotc/eclipse-broadway'. It should then give you an url in the console which you can click and it will open the browser. Give it a try and ping me back on how that went.
