I find that the visual shape of the expression of the problem in code is
vital to my thinking process. But just to confuse the issue I find things
like UML diagrams totally useless in trying to structure a problem. I
generally find that the classes and their relationships appear as a gesalt
but I will commonly refactor heavily as the design/implementation
progresses.

There is little chance that my employer would spring for a trip since the
conference has little bearing on my company's product interests. However do
they have a web site that I could check out costs etc. Another factor might
be that I have little in the way of formal academic qualifications, just 45
years of experience with compiler, operating system, file system and other
assorted development endeavours.
