Re: [rt-pmc] Fwd: Future of ScalaModules

Christian, Jeff, Glyn,

Thanks for your attention.

There are special rules for an Eclipse project that require significant efforts. There was too little interest in ScalaModules to justify continuing these efforts.

The project will be continued outside of Eclipse as before. Release version 2.0 (delayed due to delayed release of Scala 2.8) is feature complete and will soon be "there" for anyone interested. We won't spend any significant efforts unless there is a good case.

Thank you,

Heiko

I agree it seems rather premature to kill the project: 6 months is nothing for building a viable community. Perhaps it's one way to find out if potential or existing users really care. At this point they ought to come out of the woodwork and plead for ScalaModules to be spared.

I too am bummed by this.  Scala and OSGi are both, independently, interesting technologies.  Together they seem to make quite a bit of sense. Some of our commercial partners have been pleased to hear that ScalaModules exists.  My impression from the start of this project was that it was a "no brainer" with good code, existing adopters, and an aggressive schedule. So, like Wayne, I wonder if it is too soon to be terminating.  What will happen to the code and existing users? Will the project continue to be worked on outside Eclipse?

In a retrospective kind of way, it would be interesting to get your review of the issues and topics that came up for you at Eclipse so we can improve where appropriate.

Jeff

Hi,

I decided to terminate the ScalaModules project. Please find the termination review slides attached.

Thank you,

Well... if we're going to do this right, we're supposed to do a Termination Review [1]. Let me know if you want some help putting the slides together.

Also, can you please inform your PMC of your decision?

Thanks,

Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for trying, but we started this process in December 2009. That's more than half a year now, which I consider too long. My point of view is: If ScalaModules was a brilliant idea, folks would have jumped upon the train. There is no (business) use case for me to invest even more time into promoting a "rather good" idea.

      Wayne, Chris,

Although ScalaModules has been in incubation for quite a while
now, we did not manage to attract significant interest from
possible contributors or users. While lots of folks seem to
like the fancy idea of combining two "cool" technologies it
looks like there is no common use case for ScalaModules.

After talking to the other committers (Roman and Kjetil) I
decided to stop/withdraw ScalaModules from Eclipse. If I
understand the Eclipse rules correctly, this would happen
sooner or later anyway for projects with
low-level-interest/participation. Anyway, I think that now is
the time to make that decision.

Thanks a lot for your help and guidance on the way so long!
Could you please assist me one last time with this project?
What are the required steps to take?

      Best Regards,

      Heiko
