Re: [recommenders-dev] [GSoC] News Weekly Report

Hi Pawel,

1. Thanks for opening a bug.

2. Looks like a similar issue. Thanks for finding it for me.

3. Here are the steps:
- Install Eclipse for PHP Developers Mars M7.
- Install the News plugin
- After the restart, click on the news icon - you will see the news from Planet Eclipse.
- Go to preferences and switch off Planet Eclipse, or even uncheck "Enable News".
- Click again on the news icon - the new from Planet Eclipse are still there.

However, if I restart Eclipse then the preference take effect. But this should happen without a restart too.

4. OK. I see your point. But then why the icon turns red again after restarting Eclipse? Also consider the following: I have 3 news items from 10 feeds - total of 30 items. I click on the icon, I quickly go through all of them, but only choose one to click on it and read it in the browser. This will remove only one item from the list - 29 will remain. Next time the icon turns red, it will be hard for me to find out which is the new item. I would need some "new" indicator in the notification to help me.

Some additional issues:

5. Try to reduce the required dependencies. Currently the plugin depends on Code Recommenders, which depends on JDT. If I install the News plugin in a PHP IDE then I get also Code Recommenders and JDT, which does not make sense and is undesired.

6.  The notification does not look well on dark theme (at least on Ubuntu). See the attached screenshot.

Greetings,
Kaloyan

Hi Kaloyan,
thanks for your feedback ;)

1. I've created a bug to discuss it :)
2. It appears to be a Mylyn issue - https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=444539
3. Please fill the steps to reproduce this issue in a
4. It's a topic that should be discussed as well. I think that current state is fine, because icon turns orange only if there're new news, if you click on it, it says that "There are no new undread news items", however the notification pop-up contains the latest messages, so I wouldn't change it. I guess that most of people wouldn't read all news that are fetched, just the one they're interested in, so current behaviour is fine for me.

Hi,

I installed the plugin and played a little bit with it. I was able to add my own feed via extension point and it fetches the news.

Great work so far! :-)

Below are few things that I can provide as feedback.

1. Most user may not notice the little icon on the bottom right turning red. Can we show the notification message once new news are fetched? We can have this configurable, so users who are annoyed can switch this off? We can even have it off by default, and instead show a one-time notification explaining what this little icon is about.

2. The notification does not popup in the expected location when having multi-screen setup. See the attached screenshot. My primary screen is the right one (laptop), the secondary screen is on the left. The IDE is in the right screen, but the news notifications pops on the left screen. I was quite confused in the first few minutes wondering why no notification pops up. I am not sure if this is an issue in the news plugin or in Mylyn Notifications.

3. Preference configuration does not seem to work. I tried switching off the Planet Eclipse feed, but It is still shown in the notification.

4. The icon state is not calculated properly. When it is red and I click on it then it turns gray - They are no new unread news items. However, this is incorrect, because I haven't opened any of the news. I expect it becomes gray when I read all of the available news. BTW, a "Mark all as read" button/action link in the news notification/context menu might be helpful.

Keep up the good work!

It's currently available (along with other Code Recommenders features)
for our head update site only:

  <http://download.eclipse.org/recommenders/updates/head/>

Please be aware that head builds may be unstable at times, but I am sure
Pavel values any feedback you may have.

Best wishes,

Andreas
