There is another way to access Aqua:

The default Swing look&feel for the Macintosh is the Aqua look.
However in contrast to any other Swing look&feel on other platforms 
the Aqua look is *not* emulated but uses the native Aqua 
implementation.
As far as I know it uses the Appearance Manager (probably via JNI), 
so if you install a different 'Appearance' a Swing application would 
adapt automatically (which is not the case for all other platforms).
Maybe this would be another approach to eliminate some of the wrapper layers.
