First, let me say that the p2 team apologizes for the growing pains that
the community has had to feel during our integration into the SDK. We
realize this is especially painful the week before EclipseCon as people
(including those on our team) are busy preparing tutorials and demos.
Martin, the end goal is for links folders to work, as well enable a dropins
folder where users can place things that will be discovered. This is
covered by John's previous email and on the wiki at:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/Equinox_p2_Getting_Started. The old-style sdk zip
that uses update.configurator to start and discover new plug-ins are no
longer produced by the build.
As far as the build process itself, the build is done differently now. Now
we build all the plug-ins and features, then generate metadata for them,
then run p2 to provision the sdk zip file. This is roughly equivalent to
replacing the basebuilder for every build, which is difficult and probably
scares the pants off the releng people reading this email.
That being said, we have been running our changes locally and things work
great. We have been running the test suites on a p2 provisioned sdk. We
have been using the links and dropins folders to add function to our
Eclipse installs. But when these changes are integrated as part of the
build process, things go wrong. Trust me when I say we have been doing more
test builds this week than you can imagine and Kim would like to admit. It
is a difficult process as test builds take several hours to complete and
ultimately pass or fail.
Also a problem is that the results sometime vary across build machines.
This latest build, in particular, was intended to be an internal test build
on the real build machine because we had been using a new machine and
thought perhaps there might be config problems. We have also had many
failed test builds due to other problems like the "feature qualifier didn't
change" as described by bug 208143. The problem here is that since we are
running test builds so frequently not a lot of code has changed and
sometimes the feature identifier qualifiers don't change.
And the list goes on and on. All we can say is that the p2 and releng teams
are working hard at trying to get this right. We appreciate your patience
and are looking forward to the time where we get it right and everything
"just works".
