Unfortunately, the best I can suggest is to use a custom Makefile.  As
you've figured out, the managed build system is extremely simple (and
rigid).

(For what it's worth, Photran is open source... so if anyone out there
is interested in improving the managed build system, or funding
someone to work on it...)
