So set the expiry date to something long.

The history of the announcements allows people that aren’t frequent visitors to our web site to see what has happened and is happening in the community.

We're still announcing that EclipseCon is starting
and that early bird pricing for RCP Training ended 16 days ago...

May I suggest that announcements have an optional expiration date and that they be removed after that date?
