6. Phoenix call - Tuesday, August 22 2006 11:00am ET
1. End-users as a target audience of our website.
You'll notice that I opened bug
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=152513 to gather feedback
from the community. Ian and I will be leading an effort to improve our
site so that it is easier for Eclipse end-users and newcomers to find
the information they need. This is a dynamic new direction for us, as
we have traditionally designed our site with Developers in mind.
Because we each own a specific content sections on the website, I think
it would be a good exercise for us to
a) gather questions and feedback our end-users typically submit in the
eclipse.newcomer and eclipse.foundation newsgroups (related to your
sections of the site).
b) summarize the most popular information topics that end-users inquire
about
c) suggest ways (in the bug above) how your pages can be altered so
that this information is easier to find for our users.
For instance, if I owned the Legal section, I'd gather the common legal
questions in eclipse.foundation and wonder what I can do to make that
information easier to find. Restructure my section? Create a FAQ?
Create an Eclipse Legal for Developers page?
Please think of ideas for a new end-user-friendly website for
discussion during our next call.
2. Publishing eclipse.org-common to www.eclipse.org
This week I will publish eclipse.org-common from Phoenix to
www.eclipse.org. This will lay many long-standing bugs to rest,
including:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=114288
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=117950
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=118842
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=118958
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=119064
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=120477
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=147111
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=150820
3. Evolving the Eclipse look
Wayne's comments about Evolving the Eclipse look in
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=152488#c5 raised a red
flag with me, especially after Nathan tried to do the same thing with
the Community Portal redesign:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=136420#c7 .
I think that if we all try to evolve the Eclipse look in each of our
site sections, we're headed towards a very messy and inconsistent
site. If our website needs a new look or a new skin (and I think it
does) then I think we should work on it together. Of course, I think
that adding our personal "touch" to our pages is a good thing
(http://www.eclipse.org/callisto/ looks great BTW), without necessarily
deviating too far from the norm. IMHO, font sizes, styles and colours,
and other key page elements should be very consistent throughout the
site. Let's talk about this on our next call.
4. Reminder: quality
During our last call, Ralph scolded us (rightfully so) about our
site's quality. I'd like to thank everyone for their efforts in making
sure the content that goes up on our pages is professional and
error-free.
5. http://www.eclipse.org/documentation/
The Documentation landing page belongs to the Eclipse project team.
I'd like for Phoenix to assume ownership of it, so we can (at least)
update it to include 3.2, Phoenixize it and rework it into a useful
tool. We can talk about this on our next call, so please think about it.
6. Phoenix call - Tuesday, August 22 2006 11:00am ET
I'd like to propose we schedule a call for the above date/time. If
anyone can't make it, I'll suggest another time.
Thanks,
Denis
