Note the plug-in/feature dependency concerns that David notes
below.

Subject: [eclipse.org-planning-council] Some items for Monday June 2
call
Some potential
items of discussion for ramp down call, if there is room on the agenda:
1. Consistent
features installed?
2. How to
handle capabilities in EPP Packages?
1. Are all your
features being installed as you expect them in all installation scenarios?
There's a
change in behavior in "Software Updates" when using P2, instead of
Update Manager.
See bug 231453
for some details and discussion.
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=231453
This impacts us
in WTP, and we need to improve the way our feature dependancies are defined
(basically to remove all plugin dependancies and use feature dependancies
instead).
This is
critical for "patch maintenance" to work, since for this release,
that will be feature based.
Plus, it's
critical to get all our documentation installed, since that's only specified in
features, not plugin dependancies.
Maybe others do
not have this problem ... but, wanted to ask ... and give some warning this
will be cause some "late"changes in WTP .. which hopefully will be
transparent ... but, not sure.
So, from what I
know, there's three ways of installing "stuff" and I'm wondering if
we are (or if we should check?) that each results in consistent features being
installed:
unzip EPP packages?
installation from "Software Updates"?
installation based on just "unzipping" a collection of
zip files?
2. I know of
one possible discrepancy ... I think the Modeling Package includes Eclipse SDK
_feature_ so it get's Capabilities preference page.
How do others
do this?
We in WTP have
not solved that yet ... and, I'm still wondering what the best solution is? (We
do not want to include "SDK" just for one preference page!).
See bug 130502
for the long history and discussion of this issue which has existed for years
...
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=130502
... and
re-reading it now, I see it concludes with
<quote>
since we are assuming that EPP will do
something here, would it be reasonable
to reassign this bug to them? Or perhaps we should open a new one and
reference this one... Tod? David? someone want to carry
that torch?
</quote>
So ..
I've opened bug 235039
