Re: [m2m-iwg] Curating Stack Overflow

The nice thing about an infant SO tag is the ability to steer the direction.  For example, there are a few questions about Orange M2M and these may inhabit the m2m tag if allowed to continue.  However, it is possible to create a new tag orange-m2m and re-tag these questions to it.  Also possible to create a django-m2m tag in the same fashion.  One can also edit the tag wiki to provide the context for questions with that tag and that later justifies re-tagging questions not fitting that context.  As a rule SO tolerates the repatriation of generic terms that have been appropriated by vendor-specific communities.  For example, I updated the mq tag to explain that it is a generic term and to put vendor-specific questions in their respective tags.  This helped separate what had been a mix of WMQ, Active MQ, Zero MQ and other questions so they did not compete with each other.  The direct competitor for M2M as we use it is model-to-model and I'm not sure how to resolve that but ultimately, the preponderance of questions determines the tag.  It isn't out of the question that members on this list or the M2M community could take existing FAQs and port them directly to Stack Overflow to seed the tag.  If several people in the community asked/answered each other's FAQ entries and then voted them up it would take as little as 4 or 5 questions and answers each to establish the tag as primarily machine-to-machine and obtain the top spots on the tag summary page.  This is pretty much how I was able to obtain moderation of the mq and WMQ tags and grow the usage of the latter.

I'm not saying that Stack Overflow is so important that it needs to be featured in the m2m working group's social outreach strategy.  However, even a few casual users adding to what Roger and Andy are doing will have an out-sized influence over the tags and community there.  If this thread results in just one or two more people watching the tags and contributing once in a while, over time that small course correction will result in a much more positive outcome in that community.

Thanks T.Rob, this is helpful

Regarding the "m2m" tag, I would unfortunately not say that the activity is growing just yet. Lots of the questions that are asked are either related to M2M as in "Model-to-Model", or M2M as in a Django (Python CMS) technology
I wish there would be more machine-to-machine activity on StackOverflow though, and I agree it is important for everyone to try monitoring what's happening there as much as possible, and +1 the top contributors!

Cheers,
Benjamin--

[m2m-iwg] Curating Stack Overflow

I was browsing through the MQTT and M2M tags on Stack Overflow and noticed that activity there is growing.  However, curation of the tags is a bit low.  In MQTT Roger Light and Andy Piper are closely tied with 28 answers each and the next highest answerer has 3 answers.  In the M2M tag there are 70 questions and the top answerer has only 8 votes on 2 answers.

If you believe that the Stack Overflow community is important to MQTT and M2M, here are some tips I've found useful while I've been growing the websphere-mq tag there.
  • Monitor the RSS feed for the tags of interest and be responsive in the tags you wish to curate.  Developers are more likely to ask questions in the tag if they see a high proportion of answered questions and within those a high proportion of answers accepted.
  • Enlist the aid of other SMEs to respond to questions.  Same reason as above.
  • Go back answer historical questions that have no answer or a poor answer.
  • Vote on questions in the tag.  Developers are more likely to ask questions that they are likely to receive points for.  Tags where questions get many votes get all the love.  Tags where questions get very few votes tend to hear a lot of crickets.
  • Vote on answers.  Roger and Andy had many questions with no votes or only 1 vote.  More rep means your curators have more moderator rights in the tag.  It's almost impossible to achieve mod rights in a lightly trafficked tag so voting for each other's Q&A is crucial.  From the tag summary page you can click on the user's score and see all their responses in a tag and then go give them some votes.  (Don't vote for the same person more than 10 times in a day or the votes are rolled back for attempted gaming of the rep system.)
