Yes, please submit git-format-patch formatted patch as attachment to a
new enhancement request in m2e bugzilla. We will also need separate
patch for https://github.com/sonatype/m2e-core-tests with corresponding
test.

Similar topic: I have a small configurator that reproduce the
maven-eclipse-plugin behaviours for extra configurations files
(formatter config, carriage return checstyle etc ). Where is the place
for such configurators in m2e plugins?
