For Mac all you have to do is download the HDFView Application at

http://www.hdfgroup.org/products/java/release/download.html

Then in your ~/.bash_profile just write

export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH:/Applications/HDFView.app/Contents/Resources/lib
