I'm just a GEF beginner, but I was planning to implement mixed rich text
and figure editing with LaTeX style layout using GEF.
If you're thinking about text editing & layout, you might want to look
at the excellent layout and editing design built into the, now defunct,
InterViews GUI framework (from Stanford?).  It later became the
basis for Fresco - the ill fated X11R6 std C++ API that never was.
A quick & clear overview of the elegant layout design can be had
by this short paper (which I downloaded from the InterViews ftp site
