Re: [epp-dev] Juno SR1 EPP updates stopped

Thanks, David and Ian for testing the new p2 repositories! It helps a lot if someone else double checks.

I haven't seen any complaints on the mailing lists and on bugzilla, and decided to do now as proposed: The SR1a.315 repository is now enabled, or better, its content is now mirrored into the production EPP repository at http://download.eclipse.org/technology/epp/packages/juno.

Thanks,
Markus

Update and current status:

Thanks to Ian we were able to track down the root cause of this update problem:

  https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=390984
Buckminster is creating touchpoints with the wrong case for the Eclipse launcher

Based on this change I've created two new EPP repositories (longer description available at https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=390756#c39).

What I propose now is to release the new EPP repository currently at

  http://download.eclipse.org/technology/epp/packages/juno/SR1a.315/

on Monday, 2012-10-08 at the latest.

The consequence of this will be that

(1) Someone with a Juno release package will get a direct update to the latest version.
(2) Everyone who already updated from Juno to Juno SR1 (about 17.000 installations) will get another update, needs to download the new content.jar, artifacts.jar, the new feature and the new branding plugin. Together that is about 170 kBytes of data.
(3) Everyone who downloads a Juno SR1 package from the main download page will be in the same situation as someone from (2).

Now I'd like to get some feedback from people who are able to test the update with the new EPP repository. I successfully tested it on my Linux machine, but I am unable to test it on the other platforms, especially on a Mac. Please report your results on bug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=390756.

Thanks,
Markus

I pulled the plug... until we understand better what we can do about it. Updates for EPP packages from Juno to Juno SR1 are disabled now.

There were severe problems reported by some MacOSX users who updated from Juno to Juno SR1 and seem to have lost there eclipse.ini. After some investigations I am quite sure that the problem is restricted to MacOSX only.

Here is the new bug:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=390756
Eclipse hanging after startup with OutOfMemory errors after upgrade

I think this is a reincarnation of this old bug:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=338310
eclipse.ini missing after Helios SR2 upgrade; fails to launch

Next step is to get some feedback, maybe someone can point into the right direction what has changed underneath. Even better would be a suggestion how to fix this problem this time.

Thanks,
Markus
