I made the decision that it is/was too late in the cycle to remove
UDC.
I will make retirement plans for it in time for Juno.

It does seem a shame this data collection

As one point of input: we in webtools
did use the data once to set priorities. We determined that our
_javascript_
editor _was_ in wide spread use, wide-enough to justify improving
it, growing
the community, etc.. rather then investing elsewhere. Without that
data,
it would have been hard to assess, and, I think, it might have
been
assumed it was not in widespread use and not improved.
I know one case won't make or break
the decision, I just wanted to point out at least one case where
it was
useful, important data.
I would have liked to have used the
data even more, over time, on a regular basis, but found it hard
to work
with, and never did get back to it, given other priorities.
It is especially unfortunate that error
logs and configurations can not be be provided, since that's a
clear case
helping to prioritize issues.
Good luck with your decision. If you
decide to keep it around, and start a task force on how to improve
the
situation, let me know. I'd try to participate and help come up
with a
livable plan, if you think I could help (little that I know about
"bigdata").
I doubt its removals would be ruin anything about eclipse, but, as
these
things often go, it may have just been a bit before its time, and
this
kind of data will become more important over the next decade of
Eclipse's
history?
We've been running the UDC for a number of years now. Despite my
own
efforts and the efforts of several individuals, companies, and
university researchers, we have not yet been able to make any
really
valuable use out of the data. My sense is that the amount of
effort that
we've been spending far outstrips the value of the data
collected. And,
as the bug record indicates, we really need to spend more effort
to just
maintain the status quo.
Unfortunately, attracting additional committers to the project
won't
solve the problem. Ultimately, it's the huge volume of data that
the
main problem. Privacy concerns prevent us from making this data
widely
available, and careful dissemination to individuals has proven
fruitless.
Ian and I have discussed this and we feel that it is time to
retire the
UDC.
I am concerned about making changes to the composition of the
packages
at this late date in our development cycle, but would like to
recommend
that we do so immediately to ensure adequate time for testing. I
will
plan to archive UDC following the Indigo release.
Time is very short for discussion, but I am open to suggestions
or
counterarguments.
