Re: [epp-dev] EPP Wizard Project

Markus,

I had a feeling the P2 installer was that smart, thanks for confirming it!

Hi Gabe, that sounds great.

The installer.properties file contains only the places from eclipse.org <http://eclipse.org>, but the installer is smart enough to use the Eclipse mirror servers if the p2 artifact repositories are listing them in a correct way. E.g. if you are looking into the Ganymede artifact.jar (http://download.eclipse.org/releases/ganymede/artifacts.jar), you will find a line such as this one

<property
name='p2.mirrorsURL'
value='http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/releases/ganymede/&format=xml&protocol=http'/ <http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/releases/ganymede/&format=xml&protocol=http%27/>>

which points to the mirrors. If you are using Linux, you could use netstat, iptraf, etc. tools to watch the outgoing TCP connections.

Markus,

I was able to run the wizard, select some packages, download the
installer and run it. I ran the installer, but it took a long
long time to run and I had to stop it (I had to go home). I will
try running the installer again and see if it will finish up
today. Sometimes in the late afternoon our bandwidth at the office
seems to drop to a trickle.

One thing I noticed looking at the 'installer.properties' file is
it only lists eclipse.org <http://eclipse.org> as the source for
packages. Is the P2 installer smart enough to pull from our
mirror sites? If not we might need to add a step to the Wizard to
select mirrors, otherwise when we launch the Wizard we are going
to kill the eclipse.org <http://eclipse.org> site.

Hi Gabe,

this is very good news!

I went over the list of open bugs of the EPP wizard and
thought that we can update and close most of them. With the
exception of bug 247613
<https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=247613>
(feedback form) and 248569
<https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=248569> (EPP
UDC for the Wizard) they could be closed. I will check today
and update the bugs.

You wrote that you are now able to run the wizard? Does that
include creating the installer, downloading it and using the
installer to create a custom Eclipse on your disk?

Regards, Markus

Hello EPP Developers,

I just wanted say hello to everyone on this list, as I
have been
asked to contribute to the ongoing EPP Wizard project. The
first
thing I have been working on is reading (and updating) the WIKI
pages for the EPP Wizard.

http://wiki.eclipse.org/EPP/Wizard

Mostly I have been working on going over the docs on how
to setup
a development environment for working on the EPP Wizard.
With some
help from Markus I now have a working version of the EPP Wizard
running on my development machine!
I guess it is now time to start reading the open bugs to
see what
needs fixing.
